ORLANDO, Fla. — No. 1 overall pick Paolo Banchero didn't disappoint in his debut at Amway Center on Tuesday night, scoring 17 points and grabbing nine rebounds in the Orlando Magic's 109-105 preseason victory against the Memphis Grizzlies.

What You Need To Know

  • Paolo Banchero scored 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds in his first game in Orlando

  • Banchero was the first overall pick in the NBA Draft in June

  • The Magic's final preseason game is Friday against Cleveland

  • Orlando guard Jalen Suggs was out with a right knee injury

Orlando's four other starters — Wendell Carter Jr., Franz Wagner, Terrence Ross and Cole Anthony — and rookie Caleb Houstan all also scored in double figures in the win.

Desmond Bane led the Grizzlies with 33 points, and Ja Morant had 23 points.

Orlando will play its final preseason game on Friday against the Cleveland Cavaliers, also at 7 p.m.

Orlando is 3-1 so far in the preseason, with victories against the San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Mavericks and Memphis.

One player who wasn’t active for the game is Magic guard Jalen Suggs, who injured his left knee in last week’s victory against the Mavericks. Suggs has a sprained left knee capsule and a bone bruise in the knee. His return to action will depend upon how he responds to treatment, according to the Magic.

Guards Markelle Fultz and Gary Harris and forward Jonathan Isaac also are out. Fultz fractured a big toe during offseason workouts, and Harris had surgery to repair a meniscus before the start of preseason. Isaac has not played since undergoing knee surgery in 2019.

The team on Monday signed free-agent guard Drake Jeffries, who played at Wyoming last season, President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman announced. They waived Alex Morales out of Wagner College, one of two guards they had added Saturday. The other guard signed Saturday was Jay Scrubb, who played in 18 games for the Los Angeles Clippers last season, Weltman announced.

To make room on the roster Saturday, they waived Aleem Ford and Zavier Simpson, who both played in preseason and Summer League games for the Magic. The roster now stands at 20 players and must be down to 17 before the start of the regular season.
