LAKE MARY, Fla. - Anyone who knows her will tell you Brianna Letterio is in constant competition.

  • First picked up softball as a freshman at Trinity Prep
  • Lake Mary Prep had no softball team this season
  • Father Shane is a former MLB Draft pick

"You can come here and she can be dead perfect in everything she does, and it will never be good enough for her," her father Shane said.

It's a constant source of self-pressure.

"Yeah, every time I was like, I need to do my best, I need to play my best, I want to be the best I guess," she said.

So you can understand her disappointment when she was told Lake Mary Prep was eliminating its softball team for the year due to low enrollment. But every competittor finds a way on the field.

"She came here one day and said, 'oh what am I going to do?' And [Coach Justin] Varitek and [Coach Jonathan] Krot had suggested, 'well why don’t you play baseball?' And I thought, well that’s funny. That’s never going to happen though. We’ll see," Shane, who is also a baseball assistant coach, said.

It turns out seeing is believing.

"I can’t mess up. I can’t mess up," she said. "I don’t want them to be like, 'oh why is she out there?' I just had to take a breath and I was like, 'oh I got this.'"

Krot was confident she’d be a perfect fit for the Griffins baseball team, but never expected this.

"The door’s always been open," Krot said. "We always knew that she was going to contribute in some facet to our program. It’s just been great that she’s been able to be a starter for us."

She led the team in on-base percentage through the end of the regular season, and earned the respect of all her peers in the process.

"Opponents will say a few little things, but other than that everyone usually respects me," she said. "And the team asks every game, 'are they treating you well?' So they have my back once again."

The kind of assurance a father needs, and that a coach strives for with one of his best players.

"I’ve kind of sat back and I’ve let her do her own thing," Shane, a former Major League Baseball draft pick, said. "Before every game I tell her two things. I say 'play aggressive, but have fun.' As long as she does that, I really could care less what she does."

Because whatever she does, she’ll be building her legacy in the process.

"If you have something that you want to do, and you have a limit I guess or something is limiting that, just keep doing it," she said. "Like with the no softball team, I’m still out here playing. I didn’t want to stop playing softball, so I’m here."
