PALM HARBOR, Fla. - The grounds are as lush and green as ever.
The Innisbrook Resort is ready to host the Valspar Championship.
The Valspar Championship is back, sort of.
“It is semi-normal,” Tournament Director Tracy West said. “We’re not going to be the same size that we normally are. But it feels great.”
What a difference a year makes. Last year at the this time, West was sucker punched when three days before the Valspar was set to tee off, the Coronavirus shut it down.
“People look forward to this event, not only to see the world’s finest golfers compete on the Copperhead, but for the economic impact that it does, for the charitable impact,” West said. “But just to come out and be a part of a big event, you know, a PGA Tour event. So I think people were really disappointed last year.”
Fast forward a year and the Valspar is back, albeit with a different look. The galleries will be much smaller, limited to 1,000 fans per day. There will be social distancing and mask wearing enforced. A different feel than in year’s past. But one thing that remains the same - the stacked field.
World No. 1 and No. 2 ranked players Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas are in. So is Phil Michelson, Justin Rose and Paul Casey, the two-time defending Valspar champion going for the rare three-peat.
There’s so much Tracy West is looking forward to this week. A return to some normalcy, for sure. And a return to tournament golf.
“Our tagline is the most colorful PGA Tournament event in the world,” West said. “And Valspar really takes that to heart.“
