Deland, Fla. -- Stetson head softball coach Frank Griffin has seen thousands of swings over his 23-year stint with the Hatters.
Elizabeth Jackson's swing stands out from the crowd.
"She's a very special player," said Griffin. "I've had very few that have her tenacity but very few."
The left fielder is Stetson's best and most consistent hitter. Her 43 hits and .417 OBP lead the team.
“I hope I can rip it that’s what I’m trying to do," Jackson said. "My main goal is to just stay calm. I go up there and give it my best."
She rips it often which comes as a surprise to her head coach.
“I felt like being away from the game for three years it take her some time to get back to top rate," Griffin said. “She jumped right on the ball.”
That concept isn't foreign to Jackson. Before dominating the diamond, the junior spent two of her four years of eligibility at Daytona State; as a member of the women's golf team.
"There’s a lot more nerves in golf," Jackson said. "I was definitely a lot more nervous. Softball is definitely more enjoyable and I’m more in the moment.”
After two years on the links for the Falcons, Jackson felt a a new playing field best suited her.
“It was after my fall season and something wasn’t clicking in my life and I needed to kind of make a change," Jackson said. "My family and I were in agreement that softball was always something that was there.”
The change has paid off. Jackson says the physical transition from golf to softball wasn't as daunting as the mental. She says she outgrew the individual aspect of golf and her personality fit more for softball.
Even though her time is demanded on the diamond, the golf course is still her escape.
"I don’t miss the competitive aspect of it," Jackson said. "I live on a golf course so it’s really cool for me to walk out my backdoor and go play nine holes. I miss that part.”
After this season she says she'll find some time to play 18. Jackson and Stetson return to action Friday beginning a three-game road series at Lipscomb.
