ORLANDO -- Football punters can be overlooked at times. After all, we only see them when the offense cannot convert on its possession.
- UCF punter Mac Loudermilk has made his mark with his acting and theatrics after punts this year
- Loudermlik gained Internet fame for milking a roughing the punter call against FAU
- Teammates appreciate Loudermilk's personality and his skill for the team
But it is simply a different story for UCF and Mac Loudermilk.
He has spunk, creativity and a way to make every march onto the field memorable.
"For a specialist, one of the main parts is going out and having fun with what you do," Loudermilk said. "I may get four or five plays a game and I need to make the most of them so have a little fun out there."
It was during the Knights' game against FAU where Loudermilk's dramatic acting won out. He got clipped by a defender and dramatically fell to the ground, crawling back to the sideline. Not only did it earn him a rough the kicker call , but also the Internet.
“You gotta be able to sell something – even if it’s just barely – if you get barely bumped – you gotta flop a little bit – you gotta sell it," Loudermlik said.
Twitter had a field day honoring Loudermlik and his acting skills. And teammates appreciated the effort to help the offense.
"I loved it especially again for him being a punter, not getting that much attention for him to get as much attention as he has –with the long hair, the beard punting skills and everything," UCF receiver Gabriel Davis said.
Loudermilk has created a brand. And social media loves him.
As entertaining as he may be, he backs it up on the field and is flat-out consistent for the Knights. The senior is averaging 41 yards per punt this year.
“There’s one shot, one kill we have that one play and have to execute it to perfection,” Loudermilk said.
And when he does, we get special treats. Loudermilk, who also acts as the holder for extra points, has come up with some very entertaining routines with kicker Matthew Wright after made PATs.
“You can be yourself out there, add a little character out there so if you just go out there, hit the ball and get nudged and stand there you gotta be a performer too sometimes to get the crowd into it," Loudermilk said.
While there are some games he does not get to punt because the offense is rolling, the appreciation for his accuracy and his antics are there from his teammates.
"Just shows he loves the game," Davis said. "He works on what he does every single day, he puts a lot of work in just because he isn’t scoring a touchdown or making the big plays and tackles he’s just working with us in the hot sun.
At the end of the day, Loudermilk is a football player. A football player who can enjoy the extra eyes on him from the Internet. But in the big picture, gets what his role is on the team.
“Just going out and doing your job," Loudermlik said. "Your 1 of 11 everytime you get on that field. One shot, one kill you got the job done.”
