NASA confirmed to Spectrum News on Monday evening that it did so to go along with an executive order by President Donald Trump.
“In accordance with an Executive Order signed by President Trump, NASA is updating its language to better reflect the core mission of the Artemis campaign: returning astronauts to the lunar surface. NASA remains committed to aligning with White House guidance and ensuring mission success,” stated NASA Press Secretary Bethany Stevens.
On one of the Artemis websites, it previously stated:
“With NASA’s Artemis campaign, we are exploring the Moon for scientific discovery, technology advancement, and to learn how to live and work on another world as we prepare for human missions to Mars. We will collaborate with commercial and international partners and establish the first long-term presence on the Moon. NASA will land the first woman, first person of color, and first international partner astronaut on the Moon using innovative technologies to explore more of the lunar surface than ever before.”
The last sentence has now been removed.
No crew members have been named for the Artemis III mission.
Since Trump has returned to office, his administration has pushed to remove diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) from all federal websites with the use of executive orders.
Also gone from the Artemis III websites are two comic books called “First Woman: NASA’s Promise for Humanity.” They feature the adventures of a fictional astronaut named Callie.
The two comic books can be found embedded down below.
The Artemis III mission has been pushed back a number of times, with the latest date to return to the moon being mid-2027.
The last time humans were on the moon was the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.
All 12 humans who have walked on the moon were white men.
The Artemis II mission, where humans will return to the moon to orbit it, has Cmdr. Reid Wiseman, fellow NASA astronauts Victor Glover and Christina Koch and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen as crew members.
Glover will be the first Black person and Koch will be the first woman to orbit Earth’s lunar sister.
That mission too has been pushed back, with the current mission date being April 2026.
Spectrum News has reached out to the White House for comment and has not yet heard back. If the White House does reply, Spectrum News will update this story.
