“The contrast could not be more stark,” Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Monday en route to a rally in Philadelphia with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro to campaign for Harris. “Vice President Harris is focused on lower costs for our families and building an economy that works for working people, buying a home and good-paying jobs that come with it.”

She said Harris would help restore reproductive freedom to women across the country “that we lost the last time Donald Trump was in the White House.” During Trump's sole White House term, he nominated three conservative justices to the Supreme Court; in 2022, those three justices were part of the majority that overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling that guaranteed the right to an abortion.

During a press briefing with many of Michigan’s top elected federal and state leaders, Whitmer said the presidential election will “come down to us and a couple of other states.” She encouraged Michigan Democrats to knock on doors, make phone calls and send text messages to their friends reminding them to vote.

Trump carried Michigan in 2016 with 47.3% of the vote compared with 47% for Hillary Clinton. He lost four years later with 47.8% of the vote compared with 50.6% for President Joe Biden.

“We gotta do that same kind of work and bring that same kind of energy every single day for these next 99 days on behalf of Vice President Harris and everyone on the Democratic ticket,” Whitmer said.

Whitmer is reportedly on the shortlist of possible vice presidential running mate picks for Harris — a claim the 52-year-old denied Monday when she told CBS News that she's "not part of the vetting process” and intends to “stay as governor until the end of my term at the end of 2026.”
