The long time city commissioner had attracted an opponent in the upcoming Orlando city elections. But Corey DeVogel has dropped out of the race, the city confirmed to Spectrum News reporter Greg Angel on Wednesday.
That means, although Sheehan and DeVogel will still be on the ballot for the district 4 race on November 5, Sheehan will keep her seat.
Sheehan was first elected in 2000. She's Orlando's longest-serving incumbent, and also the city's first openly LGBTQ commission member.
Sheehan is not the only commission member who will keep their seat before the first vote is cast. No one filed to run against District 2 Commissioner Tony Ortiz, so he was automatically re-elected as well.
Orlando will still have an election on November 5 though.
Two people are challenging Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer -- District 6 Commissioner Sam Ings, and Navy veteran Aretha Simons.
Spectrum News 13 will host a debate for the three candidates on Thursday, October 24 at 7 p.m.
The debate will take place at the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center, and you can attend it for free by heading to this link on our website.
Meanwhile, because Ings is running for mayor, he must vacate his commission seat.
Former state senator Gary Siplin, health care businessman Bakari Burns, and fiscal consultant and activist Lawanna Gelzer are running to replace Ings.
The district 6 city commissioner serves an area that includes Holden Heights, Richmond Heights, Carver Shores, and Metrowest.
