Violent crime in New York City has dropped in the first three months of 2025, according to data from the NYPD.
Murders fell from 95 to 62 during the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same time frame last year, data shows.
Shootings have also dropped sharply during the first three months of the year. Police data shows there have been 141 shootings, with 165 victims, so far this year. That represents a 22.2% dip from the 180 shootings and the 212 victims at the same time last year.
Robberies, felony assaults, burglaries and grand larcenies all dropped during the first quarter of 2025 as well, according to NYPD data.
Compared to the same time last year, robberies dropped 22.3%, felony assaults fell 2.4%, burglaries dropped 4.9% and grand larcenies fell 14.2%, NYPD data shows.
According to the data, transit crime decreased by 17.5%, with 461 incidents reported in the first quarter of 2025 compared to 559 during the same time in 2024, and hate crimes dropped 16.2%, from 142 to 119.
Tisch took over in November and has made several changes — removing some top officials, taking steps to expand the force and increasing efforts to address repeat offenders.
Two months ago, New York City recorded its lowest number of shooting incidents for any January since the NYPD began tracking that statistic more than 30 years ago.
Tisch has credited previous drops in crime to the city’s implementation of “zone-based policing,” which uses an algorithm to pinpoint areas of heightened crime and deploy officers accordingly.
