Ceremonies honored National Vietnam War Veterans Day in Western New York on Saturday.

An event was held at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park.

It was March 29, 1973, when the U.S. Military Assistance Command in Vietnam disbanded and the final combat troops left the country. More than 58,000 U.S. troops died in Vietnam.

"Today, we say thank you and welcome home to those that didn't make it home. Rest assured, we will never forget," said Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park President and CEO Paul Marzello.

The Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park opened for the season on March 22.

In Cheektowaga, Assemblyman Patrick Chludzinski honored an Army veteran who served during Vietnam.

James Schmukal served as an infantry medic and was responsible for stabilizing injured troopers until they could be safely evacuated.

Schmukal was presented with a citation thanking him for his service.

“As a veteran, I understand firsthand the sacrifices our service members make and the challenges they face both in uniform and when they return home,” Chludzinski said in a statement. “Vietnam Veterans Day is an opportunity to give these heroes the recognition they deserve, ensuring their bravery and sacrifices are never forgotten.”
