ORLANDO, Fla. — NASA began reducing its workforce, a NASA spokesperson confirmed Monday.
The agency is complying with President Donald Trump's executive order instructing all federal agencies to submit an initial plan for reductions in its workforce and reorganization.
NASA is working in coordination with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and the U.S. Office of Management and Budget and began implenting a phased workforce reduction.
"We will close NASA’s Office of Technology, Policy, and Strategy, the Office of the Chief Scientist, and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility branch in the Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity, along with reducing their workforce," acting administrator Janet Petro said in an update Monday.
There is no official word yet on how many employees will lose their jobs or how many positions will be eliminated.
Eligible employees can choose to participate in NASA's voluntary early retirement program, an agency spokesperson said.
