MELBOURNE, Fla. — East Melbourne Avenue will close again, in both directions, as soon as 7 p.m. Sunday so crews can make repairs to the Crane Creek U.S. 1 bridge that runs over the roadway, the Florida Department of Transportation said Friday.
The southbound outside lane on the U.S. 1 bridge will also be closed during the repairs, which could take up to two weeks.
Schedules are subject to change because of weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
The bridge was hit by a box truck Thursday afternoon, less than 24 hours after the same bridge was hit by a truck towing a trailer Wednesday night.
Crews had closed the road on Thursday after the bridge was hit for the second time. FDOT crews inspected the integrity of the bridge, and Melbourne Avenue was reopened temporarily on Friday.
The following detour will be in place for East Melbourne Avenue:
- Motorists seeking to travel eastbound on East Melbourne Avenue will be directed to head north on Melbourne Court, turn right onto East New Haven Avenue, and turn right onto Front Street to access East Melbourne Avenue.
- Motorists wishing to travel westbound on East Melbourne Avenue will be directed to head north on Front Street, turn left onto East New Haven Avenue, and turn left onto Melbourne Court to access East Melbourne Avenue.

Heavy damage to the bridge was caused when a trailer hauling a backhoe was too tall for the 11-foot, 7-inch opening over Melbourne Avenue on Wednesday night.
Smashed concrete fell, leaving a large debris pile on the roadway.
Late into the night, a crew cleaned up the mess and patched up the damaged areas to secure them.
Tom Landrum, who lives in a condo next to the bridge, came out to see what happened.
“It was a nightmare last night because they had to go through our parking lot, all the cars," he said. "We didn’t have anywhere to park."
There was another incident in the same spot Thursday afternoon.
A box truck driver tried to go underneath the bridge, but the truck was too tall.
The top of the truck was slightly damaged and part of the tarp put up to protect Wednesday night’s damage was pulled down.
