ORLANDO, Fla. — After seven months of discussions, design plans for the permanent Pulse memorial will soon be presented to city officials. The design will honor the 49 people killed and the dozens injured in a terror attack at the Pulse nightclub in 2016.
On Feb. 24, city council members will get a look at some of the work that’s been done by the Pulse Memorial Advisory Committee.
One last meeting was held Tuesday to go over the 12 renderings created by design assistants.
While the renderings are not the final design, they are intended to serve as a set of instructions for the chosen developers.
“Any designer that comes on board to assist in this process will understand what (the committee) were looking to achieve,” design assistant Wayne Dunkelberger said.
While committee members were mostly satisfied with the renderings, from the Survivors’ Commons to the Healing Garden, committee members were split over which breach wall option to choose from.
While some find it important to preserve the west wall of the nightclub in the memorial, others say it’s too jarring.
“We all know about the violence,” committee member Nancy Rosado said. “We shouldn’t be making it, having it have such a starring role.”
The alternative was given props for giving the feeling of “passing through something like a portal.”
Despite Rosado's opposition to one of the options, she expected different opinions Tuesday night.
“Nobody is going to walk away from this completely satisfied, and that’s ok. That’s what negotiating is about,” she said.
Another member of the committee, Marcelino Rivera, said, “There were plenty of opportunities for the community to give their input, and it was all taken into consideration.”
Of the 18 members of the committee, 15 are survivors or lost someone in the tragedy. The other three helped in the response to the attack, including Rosado.
Some other features included in the permanent memorial designs are a water feature, greenery, ample parking and a noise mitigation feature.
In March, city leaders plan to issue a request for proposal for a design for the permanent memorial.
City officials anticipate that construction for the memorial will begin sometime at the end of 2026 and expect to have it completed by fall or late 2027.
