Dozens of local food pantries will now be able to stock up better and more often.

It will help locations such as the Eau Gallie Baptist Church food pantry.

Mark Harpold is an associate pastor and helps run the charity that is open and busy from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

He says they average 25-40 clients each of those days.

“Each one of those clients represents a family, so that could be two people, it could be four, it could be six, so we could serve food for as many as a couple hundred people just in a week span,” Harpold said.

The pantry is one of 80 partner agencies in Brevard County who work with Second Harvest.

And with the economy still unsteady, pantries like the one at Eau Gallie are getting busier.

So, it is good timing that Second Harvest is opening up a larger warehouse in Melbourne that increases the capacity to store perishable goods and groceries by 50%.

There is also a more efficient way for their partners to pick up goods.

“This makes it more convenient for them because now they can pick up more food and get it back into the community even faster,” says Derrick Chubbs, CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

The new warehouse has space for volunteers to help out with packing events.

“Volunteerism saves us around $5 million, that’s not having to pay someone to do food sorting, and inventory work, so that frees us up to purchase a significant amount of food,” Chubbs said.

Brevard County has seen a recent jump in demand for food, according to Second Harvest.

They delivered over 8 million meals to people across Brevard County in 2024.

Harpold is grateful the warehouse is less than 10 minutes away from the church.

“People are struggling, the need is going to grow, so it’s good to have a big warehouse where we can meet that need,” he says.
