DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The 63rd Annual Rolex 24 in Daytona came to a close Sunday with the No. 7 Porsche 963 finishing first overall for the second year in a row.
For 24 hours straight, the Daytona International Speedway had four different racing classes all compete on the same track.
The chaos made for an incredible day of racing as the No. 6 Porsche and the No. 7 Porsche teams seemed to be battling for the top spot the whole race.
But it was during the 22-minute mark when Felipe Nasr edged his Porsche Penske Motorsport teammate Matt Campbell to take the lead and he never let it go.
“In that final hour I just went for it, you know,” Nasr shared. “The pace was there and getting through traffic and it was just incredible to cross that finish line again and I had a big, big smile on my face.”
No. 60 Acura Meyer Shank Racing finished second overall, and the No. 6 Porsch Penske Motorsport team finished third.
The overall victory handed the No. 7 Porsche team and Nasr their second overall victory in a row.
It’s a huge feat considering team Penske had gone 55 years in a row prior without a Rolex 24 victory.
The win also gave Laurens Vanthoor his first victory at the Rolex 24.
“Yeah, it’s amazing. I’ve been dreaming of this stage for a long time and came close a couple times, but I think almost every driver in this paddock would love to drive one of these cars, you know,” Vanthoor said. “Hybrid cars, the main stage, and then the Porsche. At the same time, in those chrome trucks for Penske, for Roger Penske and just to be able to win this race, it doesn’t get any better than that.”
For Nick Tandy, the weekend’s victory makes him the first driver ever to win all four major 24 hour races, and he shared how truly grueling these endurance races can be.
“It’s tough on your body, but the hard thing is the mental aspect,” Tandy said. “Keeping everyone fresh, keeping ready to go and the pit crew. Everybody has got to be ready to go.”
So, finishing on top despite the obstacles makes winning that much sweeter.
“This is the biggest race you know, and we like to win and here we are,” said Nasr. “We did it last year and here we are back to back.”
Felipe Nasr says now that he has overall wins at Sebring and the Rolex 24, his goal is now to capture the elusive Triple Crown and win at Le Mans.
