Ed Kunigonis says drivers speed on State Road 3, also known as the Tropical Trail and Courtenay Parkway in Merritt Island.

“I think it’s a beautiful drive. I think it would be made even nicer if people would just slow down and obey the speed limit,” said Kunigonis.

When Kunigonis is driving down to Pineda Causeway, he’ll encounter speeders, a lot of them, tailgating and acting aggressively.

“I can’t imagine what is so important that you would have to exceed the speed limit to a point where you’re putting other people at risk just to get where you’re going,” he said.

He has even been passed multiple times on a double yellow line.

“I think the only way you’re going to change driving behavior is to increase enforcement,” Kunigonis said.

Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Tod Goodyear says their motor unit will be on the lookout for speeding and aggressive drivers.

“(Our Motor Unit Supervisor) advised that South Tropical Trail is an area that they mark for consistent enforcement,” said Goodyear.

On one particular day, after we reached out to BCSO, deputies wrote 15 citations on SR-3.

“The only thing that’s going to make it permanent in terms of safer for driving is if people take the personal responsibility to drive safer on a daily basis, to follow the rules of the road. It’s not a hard thing to do,” said Kunigonis.
