ORLANDO, Fla. — It’s no secret parking at the Orlando International Airport can be a headache, especially during peak travel seasons, but new steps are being taken to mitigate frustrations.
A new parking guidance system is being installed that officials hope will improve the traveling experience.
“This is a step in the right direction to get to greater clarity in the direction for parking allocation at the airport,” Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) Board Chair Tim Weisheyer said Wednesday. “I couldn’t be more excited to be moving this forward.”
The camera-based system will provide real-time information about parking availability, with color coded lights pointing drivers to open spaces.
These systems are similar to those found at Central Florida attractions like Disney Springs.
Heidi Miller, who was picking up a friend on Wednesday, said any improvement would be a helpful.
“This is definitely a headache you don’t want to do more than once or twice a year,” she said. “I drove around in here for about 15 minutes before I found a spot.”
Officials say the new system will also have digital signage on roadways, garage entry points and throughout garages showing real-time information about the number of open parking spots available lane by lane.
According to GOAA officials, after a design period, installation is expected to begin by mid-2025 and will take approximately 24 months to complete.
Garages will remain open as crews install the parking guidance system in phases.
The cost for the new system will be just over $13 million.
