  • Sanford city commissioners approved a resolution to raise starting salaries for police officers to $58,000

  • The resolution will cost Sanford over $1 million, with half of the funding coming from the city’s reserves

  • Mayor Art Woodruff highlighted the city’s efforts to remain competitive in attracting and retaining employees while balancing future budget needs

Currently, Sanford police officers earn a starting salary of approximately $52,000. The approved resolution will raise that figure to $58,000. Additionally, it includes an annual $5,200 pay increase for all officers.

Mayor Art Woodruff explained that half of the funding for this increase would come from the city’s reserves. However, he cautioned that the city may face challenges in balancing the budget in future years without additional revenue or reduced expenses.

“We’re building a fire station. We’re adding 15 firefighters. We’re adding five police officers,” Woodruff said. “We’re trying to stay competitive to attract and retain the best employees for our residents. But it’s going to be an issue over the next couple of years if we don’t see more revenue coming in or costs dropping.”

The resolution reflects broader efforts by the city to invest in public safety and infrastructure. However, Woodruff emphasized the importance of ensuring that the city’s budget remains sustainable.

The decision comes amid ongoing efforts by municipalities nationwide to improve recruitment and retention in law enforcement. Sanford’s leaders hope the increases will make the department more competitive in attracting top talent.
