LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — Lake County is planning to make changes to a couple of dangerous curves on a road that’s been gaining popularity as of late.

Jim Kennedy wrote into Traffic Inbox because when he wants to take Florida’s Turnpike south, he’ll get to Hancock Road from Citrus Grove Road. Citrus Grove Road connects U.S. 27 to Hancock Road.

“The problem is it’s all narrow and if you look at the edge, there is no shoulder at all,” said Kennedy.

On both ends of Citrus Grove Road, it is four lanes. But in the middle, where there are two 90 degree turns, it is only two lanes, leading to close calls when encountering big trucks or those on bicycles.

“Right here, it goes from 40 to 15 miles an hour. And you go into this S turn and you’ve got bikers on here and if you’ve got a biker on here they might be going 6 (to) 8 miles an hour and if you’re still going 30, which a lot of people do, you come right up on them,” said Kennedy about the road.

A bike trail ends before the curves begin, otherwise Kennedy would ride his bike through this area.

Lake County spokeswoman Sarah Lux said the county plans to widen this section of Citrus Grove Road, with construction starting early next year.

The roadway will be smoothed out to take out the two 90 degree turns.

The $23-million project includes bike lanes, sidewalks and a trail to match the roadway on both ends.
