ORLANDO, Fla. — For most people, laundry day is a chore. For Daniel Park, laundry day is every day, and every day is an opportunity to make a difference.
What You Need To Know
- SALT Outreach is a nonprofit dedicated to helping those in need
- Daniel Park is a pre-med student and volunteer there who does laundry
- SALT is always looking for volunteers to help
For three years, Park has balanced pre-med education at the University of Central Florida, and volunteering at nonprofit SALT Outreach (Service and Love Together).
While volunteering, Park will spend hours in a day rotating loads of laundry.
“Laundry is one of the most popular stations. Oftentimes, we have to turn down clients. Unfortunately, sometimes we just don’t have enough room,” Park said.
For him, it’s not a chore, nor is it charity. It’s a calling.
He is inspired by the people he meets — and those he helps. Their stories encourage him to make a difference during each volunteer shift, and he said he hopes one day as a doctor.
“Volunteering here at SALT has kind of developed my interest in wanting to serve underserved populations such as homeless and I think it was the interactions I had with those who are homeless and seeing how hard their situations are," Park said. "I believe health care is something that everybody deserves, and oftentimes, unfortunately homeless, they do not get the healthcare they need, so I’d like to pursue that kind of goal.”
Park is just one of many volunteers at SALT Outreach. Eric Camarillo founded the nonprofit 13 years ago to answer a calling of his own.
“Unsheltered homeless almost doubled year over year. Last year, we served about 3,000 different people; 2,000 of them were new to our services,” Camarillo said. “Every day we have over 100 people in line for services, and every day there’s someone new.”
Those who turn out to SALT Outreach can find an array of services, including case management, laundry, shower facilities and a helping hand.
At SALT Outreach, Daniel said he knows he’s not just giving people a fresh load of laundry, he’s helping to give them a fresh start.
“It’s an amazing opportunity. I was super excited to do this and glad I can share my everyday life so maybe I can encourage others to do something like what I’m doing now,” Park said.
SALT Outreach is always looking for new volunteers. Anyone interested may complete a volunteer application on their website.
