ASTOR, Fla. — If there is an area of Lake County that knows about flooding following a hurricane, it’s the town of Astor.

What You Need To Know

  • The community of Astor, along the St. Johns River, has flooded following hurricane Milton
  • Residents say water rose up to many of their doorsteps and into their homes
  • The same area flooded during Hurricanes Nicole and Ian in 2022

Astor, a small community along the St. Johns River, has seen serious flooding following Hurricane Milton.

Resident William Fleming says it was one of the worst storms he has seen in years.

“I would say this is right next to the worst,” he said.

Fleming knows his community well, considering he has lived here since the 1980s.

The retiree says he and other residents went through the same kind of flooding back in 2022 following Hurricanes Ian and Nicole.

He decided to ride Hurricane Milton out inside his home.

“The wind was much worse than anything I have endured," Fleming said. "I underestimated it."

The 85 year old said the area may still see more flooding due to the river.

“Now the wind is blowing out of the north, which is backing the river up so it can’t drain out," he said. "And we had all that rain south of us. And so that water has to come back up the river. Expecting higher water, but hopefully it can drain off some more."
