SANFORD, Fla. — As Hurricane Milton approaches Central Florida, many residents are scrambling to make last-minute preparations.
While families stock up on supplies and fuel, one man in Sanford is using his time to help his neighbors fortify their homes against the impending storm.
Brennan Vorholt, a local resident and window installer, spent his Tuesday filling and delivering sandbags to those in need. With his construction job on hold due to the hurricane, Vorholt decided to take action by offering his services to the community through a Facebook post.
“I’ve lived here my entire life, and I’ve seen both good and bad storms come through,” Vorholt said. “I just figured I’d lend a helping hand where I can.”
Vorholt’s offer quickly gained traction online, and since Monday, he has delivered sandbags to several local families. On Tuesday alone, he dropped off bags to three households, helping them secure their homes as the threat of Hurricane Milton looms.
“I was just sitting at home, and if I didn’t do anything, I’d go stir crazy,” said Vorholt, who installs windows and sliding glass doors for a living. “I’m just an average Joe doing what I can, where I can.”
The city of Sanford has been providing residents with sand at a designated distribution site, where Vorholt has been filling bags before delivering them. His efforts have been particularly meaningful, as he recalls the support his own family received from the community during storms in the past.
“When I was younger, we had neighbors come together to help us when storms hit. I’m just grateful to be able to pay it forward any way I can,” he said.
As residents brace for what could be a significant storm, Vorholt’s actions have served as a reminder of the importance of community in times of crisis.
Hurricane Milton is expected to impact Central Florida in the coming days, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, and potential flooding.
