TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis said Florida will investigate the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump that happened Sunday in West Palm Beach at Trump International Golf Club.

 “The people deserve the truth about the would-be assassin and how he was able to get within 500 yards of the former president and current GOP nominee,” DeSantis wrote on X.

Speaking in Orlando on Monday, DeSantis said the state will announce more details about the investigation in the “coming days.” He also questioned the credibility of federal investigators, who are leading the probe into the assassination attempt against Trump.

“The same agencies that are prosecuting Trump in that jurisdiction are now going to be investigating this,” said DeSantis. “I just think that may not be the best thing for this country.”

Meanwhile, Florida Democrats are condemning the nation’s political violence.

“Our political leaders must not be targets of violence — we are relieved the former president is unharmed following a potential assassination attempt in Palm Beach County…” wrote the Florida Democratic Party on X.

Sunday’s foiled attempt marks the second attack against Trump. A gunman in July killed one person and injured two others at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania.

“There’s no place for violence in this country ever… We’re still learning the facts of what happened yesterday but in America we settle our differences not with violence, but in the ballot box,” said Tallahassee Democratic State Rep. Gallop Franklin.

The suspect in Sunday’s attempt, Ryan Wesley Routh, is in police custody. The 58-year-old faces two federal gun charges at the moment — possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
