MARION COUNTY, Fla. — Poor road conditions in a Marion County neighborhood near Silver Springs remain an issue for residents in the area.

  • Marion County says the roads are privately owned, so they can’t repair potholes

  • County suggests residents look into a special assessment to pay for fixing the roads

Former resident Teresa Vincent said the dirt roads in the Oakwood subdivision off Northeast 1st Street Road are bumpy and filled with potholes, making it difficult to drive through.

That’s why she said she left the neighborhood.

“I will not drive through that because my truck will literally go in front first all the way down into that hole,” Vincent said.

However, Vincent’s mother and brother still live in the neighborhood, and she is asking the county to put down fresh dirt and fill in the holes.

“I try to come here to visit my mother and there are days she needs to go to the doctor because her rides won’t come through here, and I literally have a hard time coming through here,” Vincent said.

A county spokeswoman said the roads are privately owned, and there is nothing it can do to fix them.

However, Vincent argues that she doesn't understand why the county can enforce other rules in the neighborhood but can’t fix the roads.

“We had our truck parked in our front yard over there, and they had a fit and they made us move it,” she said.

Another resident wrote to Traffic Inbox last year about the conditions of the roads, and the county suggested property owners work with Marion County’s Municipal Services team to explore a special assessment to pay for fixing the roads.

But a special assessment requiring owners to pay more may be a huge hurdle to overcome.

Vincent said if the roads were in better shape, she may have stayed in the neighborhood.

“I think I probably would have thought second about staying,” she said. “But it was just too much.”
