OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Osceola County voters are waiting to find out which candidate will face Jackie Espinosa in November's election to decide who will be Kissimmee's next mayor.

It is one of four local races that were too close to call. Osceola County Supervisor of Elections officials are preparing for a recount between Olga Cariño and John Cortes Friday morning in the Kissimmee mayoral race.

What You Need To Know

  • Two candidates in the Kissimmee mayoral race were separated by just four votes

  • A recount will be held by the Osceola County Canvassing Board on Friday morning between John Cortes and Olga Cariño
  • The winner will face Jackie Espinosa in a runoff in November

  • The recount will be held at 10 a.m. at the Supervisor of Elections office, and it will be open to the public

The Osceola County Canvassing Board will hold a machine recount at 10 a.m. If deemed necessary, they will hold a manual recount at 11 a.m.

Officials and political experts continue to advocate for voter turnout, saying every vote matters.

“You know six people who didn’t make it to the polls on election day could have made the difference in this race,” said Republican Eddie Fernandez. “This is a great example of why every vote counts. This race is so close, with an incumbent potentially losing a seat here, and now five or six votes are going to make the difference.”

According to a public notice from the Osceola County Canvassing Board, elections staff started pre-sorting the ballots on Wednesday morning, a process that was open to the public.

The candidates running for second place have taken to social media to express their thoughts about the closeness of the race.

“I am in the runoff for Mayor of Kissimmee,” Cortes said. “Thank you all who went out to vote.”

“A recount will be conducted, which I await with total calm and respect to our laws and democratic process,” Cariño said. “I trust this process will be carried out with the utmost transparency.”

Espinosa also took to social media, saying that she is grateful for all the support throughout her journey.

The recount process Friday also will be open to the public at the Supervisor of Elections office.
