COCOA, Fla. — All three Cocoa fire stations are now equipped with "microchip" scanners to help reunite lost pets with their owners, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals announced.
People who find wandering dogs or cats can bring them to one of the fire stations, where department staff can scan the animals to find out who their owners are.
Now they won’t have to wait to take the animal to a vet clinic or shelter.
“I know that one station, within two hours of getting their scanner, had a pet brought up that was lost," said Susan Naylor with the SPCA of Brevard. "They scanned it — it was chipped and was reunited with its parents."
The scanners were donated to the fire department by Tails of the Barkery in Cocoa.
The Titusville Fire Department and some other stations in Brevard County already have them.
The SPCA of Brevard’s goal is to get every fire station in the county equipped with the scanners.
