VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County broke ground Thursday on a new Veterans Memorial Plaza in Daytona Beach, across from the Tom Staed Veterans Memorial Bridge.

The plaza will serve as a tribute to the brave military members who served and sacrificed for the United States.

The plaza will feature amphitheater seating, a 6-foot fire feature monument with plaques along the sides engraved with the names of Volusia County soldiers who died in the line of duty.

Residents can also pay for a personalized, engraved brick.

Other plaques next to each flag will represent different branches of the armed forces.

County officials say Volusia County, a Volusia County ECHO Grant, the Daytona Beach Recreation and Facilities District, and donations from Veterans Memorial Plaza Inc. will fund the estimated $1.2 million cost for Veterans Memorial Plaza.

Dredging and Marine Consultants designed the project, and MGN Contracting will construct it.

The county said it plans to open the plaza before the end of the year with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
