PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. — As Port Canaveral continues to grow its cruise and cargo infrastructure, a Cape Canaveral cyclist wants to make sure those on two feet or two wheels are not forgotten.

Evelyn Bush said it’s challenging when she rides her bike to the port’s restaurants.

“Half of the time you have to stop in the middle lane. It is unnerving,” Bush said as she tried to cross George King Boulevard at a crosswalk.

Bush said more signs warning out-of-towners to stop for pedestrians and cyclists are needed.

On top of that, she said, the sidewalk abruptly ends in several spots.

“I really hope with the expansion of the port that they take into consideration people that ride bikes and people that walk,” she said.

Canaveral Port Authority Communications Director Steven Linden said installing and upgrading sidewalks are already underway, including at George King Boulevard and Flounder Street, and on Columbia Road. Plus, a new crosswalk at Cruise Terminal 3 is being installed.

“We are currently sponsoring a ped-bike study with an engineering consulting firm to ensure future projects align with the needs of pedestrians and cyclists,” Linden said.

Bush said she hopes more of a focus on pedestrians and cyclists will help her and others.

“I still want to be able to ride my bike to all my lovely restaurants in the port,” she said.
