ORLANDO, Fla. — A new themed area geared toward young visitors officially opened to all guests at Universal Orlando Resort on Friday.

The highly anticipated DreamWorks Land replaces Woody Woodpecker’s KidZone, which was in that area for 25 years.

What You Need To Know

  • DreamWorks Land is a new themed environment at Universal inspired by characters from the "Shrek," "Trolls" and "Kung Fu Panda" films

  • The area includes Shrek’s playground built for the young kids with slides and a wet play zone

  • A Trollercoaster, or rollercoaster, takes visitors on an adventurous ride through the trolls’ forest

  • DreamWorks character zone and Imagination Celebration is an interactive live show with LED screens

The new themed environment is inspired by characters from DreamWorks Animation’s "Shrek," "Trolls" and "Kung Fu Panda" films.

It includes interactive play areas, rides, a live show, character meet-and-greets and special menus.

A team has been working on DreamWorks Land for over two years, including the Trolls Trollercoaster, senior ride manager Kristen Steimer said.

“I like how much it pops, so there's so much sparkle in the ride vehicle itself," Steimer said. "The eyes glitter, and I just think it's great for the whole family.”

A new nighttime lagoon show and a new castle projection show at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Hogsmeade also made their debuts this week.

DreamWorks Land features multiple new themed areas, with new attractions, interactive play areas and a live show.

Shrek

Like ogres and onions, guests can peel back layers of fun in Shrek’s oasis to discover “ogre-the-top” adventures.

Shrek’s Swamp Meet: Guests can visit with characters from the film series, like Shrek himself, Princess Fiona and Donkey, the noble "steed" eager to joke around and converse with guests, just outside of Shrek’s cottage.

Shrek’s Swamp for Little Ogres: This ogre-sized play area features four fun slides, wet play areas and a playground where guests can climb, bounce and splash around or venture into Shrek’s outhouse.

Mama Luna Feline Fiesta: The blockbuster film, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, comes to life with this interactive experience, which takes place in Mama Luna’s retirement home for cats. Guests play with Mama Luna’s many cats on interactive screens activated by buttons, bells, maracas and levers.

King Harold’s Swamp Symphony: Guests can create their own masterpieces as they trigger a choir of ever-changing frog ribbits by stomping on an array of interactive lily pads.

Swamp Snacks: The new kiosk serves scrumptious snacks inspired by Shrek, including Shrekzel, Far Far A Waffle, Frozen Ogre and more.

Trolls

A fountain featuring favorite Trolls characters Poppy and Branch sits at the center of the Trolls Village, where “fantastamazing” energy flows and guests can relax and “find their happy place.”

Trolls Trollercoaster: After strolling through a dazzling marquee starring cherished Trolls characters Poppy, Viva, Tiny Diamond, Satin and Chenille, guests of all ages can ride on the "Caterbus," escaping evil spiders as they speed along a bright orange and yellow track aboard the family-friendly rollercoaster.

Poppy’s Playground: The shaded play area under a 20-foot mushroom features colorful flowers and bugs, with multiple bouncing and climbing structures for the youngsters.

Trolls Treats: Poppy’s boombox from "Trolls Band Together" has been transformed into a playful kiosk that serves up brightly colored Trolls ice cream treats inspired by Poppy and Branch, like the pink lemonade-flavored Poppy-licious Pink and huckleberry-flavored BroZone Berry.

High Five Hideaway: Cloud Guy hosts this all-new retail location featuring the latest merchandise — including apparel, plush and accessories from "Shrek," "Trolls," "Kung Fu Panda," "Gabby’s Dollhouse" and more.

Kung Fu Panda

Po from the world of the "Kung Fu Panda" movies is the focus of this themed area.

Po’s Kung Fu Training Camp: Panda Village comes to life with wet and dry play areas where guests can help the pandas wash and dry their laundry with enormous water cannons, dump buckets, giant fans and more. An interactive gongs, giggling baby pandas and oversized merry-go-round noodle bowls from Mr. Ping’s Noodle Shop are all part of the experience.

Po Live!: This digital, interactive meet-and-greet experience gives guests the opportunity to interact with the Dragon Warrior himself as he teaches them Kung Fu moves, cooks some delicious stir fry and babysits his little cousin, Ling Ling — all simultaneously.

A multisensory live show called DreamWorld Imagination Celebration combines hit pop songs, high-energy dancing and advanced technology such as LED screens to create a party atmosphere that brings to life DreamWorks stories at the DreamWorks Theater.

At other areas of Universal Orlando, the theme parks have created new entertainment experiences.

When the sun goes down, 228 fountains soaring up to 131 feet will dance on the Universal Studios Florida lagoon, along with 4K projection mapping of scenes from films that have inspired Universal Orlando's attractions, in the CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular. The show will be accompanied by the music from films in the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films, "Jurassic World," "Jaws," "Shrek," "Ghostbusters," "Trolls," "Back to the Future," "Universal Monsters," "Transformers," "How to Train Your Dragon," "E.T.," "Fast and Furious," "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," "Despicable Me," "The Mummy" and "King Kong.

In The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Hogsmeade at Universal Islands of Adventure, a nighttime show called Hogwarts Always projects iconic moments of a school year at Hogwarts on to Hogwarts castle. Scenes include supply shopping in Diagon Alley, the ride aboard the Hogwarts Express, the Sorting Ceremony and celebrating the House Cup winner. Four different endings that celebrate each Hogwarts house will culminate with a colorful pyrotechnic display, and dialogue from Harry Potter characters are part of the show.
