ORLANDO, Fla. — Orange County is looking to tackle speeding concerns on Clarcona Ocoee Road in Orlando through new safety improvement measures.

What You Need To Know

  • Orange County is planning improvements to Clarcona Ocoee Road

  • Plan is to reduce speeding by lowering speed limit, installing speed feedback signs and reduce lane widths

  • Changes will be coming between Orange Blossom Trail and Ocoee Apopka Road

  • Clarcona Ocoee Road has seen 619 crashes from 2019 to 2021

“Cars do speed pretty fast around here,” said Danielle Boggs, who works off Clarcona Ocoee Road at Canine Companions.

Speeding is one of the biggest factors behind crashes that occur on area roadways.

Orange County found from Ocoee Apopka Road to Orange Blossom Trail, Clarcona Ocoee Road had 619 crashes from 2019 to 2021.

Eight people were killed, and hundreds of others were injured.

It was back in March of 2021, when a crash killed two adults and three children on Clarcona Ocoee Road at Gaymar Drive.

Since then, a traffic signal was installed at the intersection and Orange County traffic engineers studied other possible safety solutions for this nearly eight-mile stretch of road.

Slowing down drivers seems to be the big takeaway, with the county reducing the speed limit from 45 to 40 miles per hour.

They’re also planning to install speed feedback signs at multiple locations, and reduce the widths of lanes to calm traffic.

Due to funding, long term improvements, like the installation of 6 roundabouts, will have to wait.

“Definitely a reduction in speed is a good idea anytime, especially when you’re in a busy area,” said Boggs. “These roads are just so capable, you can drive fairly fast on them, so yeah I think anywhere you can make it as safe as possible is probably the best thing you can do.”

Other Clarcona Ocoee Road improvements that will be made include a pedestrian hybrid beacon at the Walmart driveway, a traffic signal at Fountain Boulevard, and median modifications at Hiawassee and Long roads.
