CENTRAL FLORIDA — Thirteen Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery locations in Central Florida are offering free skin checks today, known as Melanoma Monday.

Melanoma continues to be a leading cancer in the United States, especially among young people, and the dermatologists at Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery are using Melanoma Monday to bring attention to the cancer.

Melanoma is the third-most diagnosed cancer among among individuals age 25 to 39 in the United States, according to the Melanoma Research Alliance. For individuals ages 15 to 29, it is the ninth-most common. 

According to the American Cancer Society 100,640 new melanoma diagnoses are expected in the United States in 2024, over 59,000 in men 41,000 in women. About 8,290 people are expected to die of melanoma this year, the American Cancer Society forecasted.

Melanoma accounts for only about 1% of skin cancers but causes a large majority of skin cancer deaths.

According to the Melanoma Research Alliance, the number of new invasive melanoma cases diagnosed annually surged 27% from 2013 to 2023
