PALM BAY, Fla. — SUNDAY UPDATE: While crews continue to watch for hot spots and flare-ups in the Space Force annex area, flames sparked in another area of Plam Bay on Sunday.

Babcock Street south of Malabar Road was shut down in both directions around noon due to new smoke and flames. Crews are evacuating a nearby homeless camp.

Officials said the fire is covering about 20-30 acres with some structures nearby.

Firefighters in Palm Bay are monitoring for hotspots and flare-ups after a large brush fire forced several homes to be evacuated.

The fire started in the Space Force annex area.

It spread from 35 to 40 acres in the area before Palm Bay Fire Rescue was able to get a handle on it.

Firefighters say wind helped the fast-moving fire spread.

Rain in the area did dampen the fire as crews worked to get it under control.

"Fires like this are very challenging for us because even though we feel like we are putting enough resources on scene, the wind really dictates the spread of that fire," said John Ringleb, assistant fire chief of Palm Bay Fire.

Fire department officials say no homes were damaged and no one was hurt.
