ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith says one of his officers returned fire on an attempted murder suspect, killing him Wednesday night.
The incident unfolded just before 6 p.m. in the area of Orange Avenue and Lucerne Circle.
“I saw at least 15 police cars,” said Valeria, a witness. “And I was like, oh my gosh, what happened? Did someone get shot or something? I was worried.”
Chief Smith says the incident unfolded after an officer stopped a vehicle with a suspect who had a number of warrants for attempted murder and aggravated stalking.
It was when the officer exited their car the suspect fired shots. Smith says the officer returned fire, killing the suspect.
“Our officers, they do a dangerous job. You never know who you’re stopping in a car. In this case, they had a bit of information that there was someone wanted on an attempted murder charge,” said Cheif Smith. “There’s a lot of officers there supporting the officer who made the initial stop.”
No officers were hurt in the incident.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigation the shooting.
