ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Traffic signals that aren’t synced are leading to frustration near Full Sail University in Winter Park in Orange County.

Sean Phalen wrote into Traffic Inbox because he says the poorly timed traffic lights are causing backups.

“Very frustrating because now there’s no way I can make (all the) lights into Full Sail campus,” said Phalen, who teaches at the university at 3300 University Blvd.

Phalen says the traffic signals are not synced at Forsyth Road and Aloma Avenue, Forsyth Road at University Boulevard, and University Boulevard at Driggs Drive.

So even if there’s no-oncoming traffic, he still must stop at the lights, he said.

It wasn’t always this way.

Phalen says a resurfacing project almost a year ago messed up the signal timing. He thought it’d be fixed by now, but since it hasn’t, he contacted Traffic Inbox.

Spectrum News 13 reached out to Orange County and the county’s traffic engineering department studied the lights at the intersections.

At Forsyth Road and Aloma Avenue, traffic engineers found that signal detection is failing. FDOT has a new video detection project set for this summer. Both the county and FDOT officials said they will work together to make temporary timing adjustments until that project is completed.

Engineers made timing adjustments at Driggs Drive at the entrance to Full Sail University, to help traffic turning into the school to clear University Boulevard in one cycle.

Engineers determined changes were not needed at the other spot.

“I try to coordinate my drive so I don’t have to be rushed,” said Phalen. “I give myself plenty of time to get there.”
