FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. — Year after year, Flagler County has seen storms batter State Road A1A along the region’s Atlantic coastline.

Just this week, a section of the road washed out in the Flagler Beach area. Several projects now aim to find a long-term fix to beach erosion, as well as other issues.

What You Need To Know

A Florida Department of Transportation project aims to resurface a stretch to extend the life of the current road. It’s a few blocks north of where the road washout last weekend.

Spectrum News 13 heard from many people, especially since last year’s hurricanes, that are anxiously awaiting a permanent fix to the years of beach erosion on A1A.

The project being discussed by FDOT on July 20 will cost about $3.5 million, covering a nearly 2-mile stretch. This will also include a focus on pedestrian safety. For people living and working in the area along A1A, it can’t come soon enough.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is also planning a separate beach nourishment project on about 2.5 miles of the coastline in the Flagler Beach area. It could begin as early as next year.

As for the resurfacing project, there’s a long road ahead. The design is expected to be completed next fall and construction would be funded to begin in the spring of 2025.

FDOT is holding the meeting at the Flagler Woman’s Club on South Central Avenue. Folks can view the project displays and talk with project team members between 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Virtual and phone options are also available.
