According to the Orlando Police Department, officers responded to a call just before 1 p.m. from a man in the 12000 block of Pioneers Way who said his girlfriend was talking about killing herself and was wielding a knife.

Investigators say a member of the Crisis Negotiation Team reached out by phone to speak with the woman, now identified as Ellis, but she hung up. Police then re-established communications with the woman, who walked out the apartment with a knife in her hand while still on the phone with the negotiator, police said. She then walked back into the apartment, they said.

Negotiators continued to try to communicate with Ellis, but when she ran out of the apartment with two knives and charged at officers, two officers trained in crisis intervention fired at her, according to the police statement.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Orlando Fire Department.

The officers who fired the shots have been placed on administrative league pending the outcome of an investigation, Orlando police said. Their names have not been released because of Marsy's Law, Orlando police said. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will conduct the investigation, followed by the State Attorney's Office. The Orlando Police Department said it also will conduct an investigation.

Officers were wearing their body-worn camera, and video was on, police said. The video will be made available within 30 days, police said.
