VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — The Volusia County Council voted Tuesday to approve a pilot program allowing dogs on a portion of Ormond Beach.
The temporary ordinance will allow dogs on a half-mile stretch of the beach between Milsap Road and Rockefeller Drive.
Volusia County has banned dogs on beaches since 1987, except at Lighthouse Point Park and Smyrna Dunes Park.
The topic has sparked lengthy discussions from the public at previous meetings.
The County Council first voted in February to move forward to explore a test area allowing dogs on the shoreline.
The Council then put the next steps on hold in March until it could get more information on environmental concerns.
The 18-month pilot program will start on Nov. 1, and will allow dogs in that specific area from sunrise to sunset.
