VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Driver Steven Scott says he’s frustrated by slower vehicles in, not just the left lane, but the middle lane too, as he travels between home and work.
Scott argues drivers should use that middle lane on I-4 and other freeways or roads for passing — not cruising.

“It just bottlenecks everything, and it alleviates room for me to maneuver, especially if there’s a situation,” Scott says.
He wants other drivers, especially drivers of large vehicles, to get in the right lane after passing slower traffic and stay out of the center lane.
“We can’t maneuver because people are in the middle lane just cruising,” he says.
While Florida law requires slower traffic to stay out of the far-left lane, there’s nothing preventing drivers from keeping in the middle lane.
AAA even has a freeway driving handout that shows the middle lane is a “through lane.”
“The center lane on the interstate can be used for traffic that is maintaining the speed limit and does not have to be strictly for passing,” Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Tara Crescenzi says.
Scott still stands by his contention that clearing the middle lane, too, for passing vehicles would alleviate a lot of the backups and frustration.
“I don’t want to start off the day, especially if I’m going into work, being frustrated because of the drive into work,” Scott says.
Scott supports a bill going through the Florida Legislature this year that would make the current law a little stricter, requiring drivers to stay out of the far-left lane unless they are passing.
“Unfortunately, if that’s the only way to get through to people is to ticket them, this will solve problems,” Scott says.
But no mention of that middle lane is in the bill, so for now, Scott will have to deal with slower traffic in that center lane.
