BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — For the second time in less than four months, Brevard Public Schools is shifting leadership at the top of the district.
In a unanimous decision, the board voted to put Interim Superintendent Dr. Robert Schiller on administrative leave immediately.
What You Need To Know
- The BPS board voted unanimously to put Dr. Robert Schiller on administrative leave
- He was hired by the board in December and began his work in January
- There was a lengthy back and forth on Schiller’s contract at the end of the board meeting
- The agenda listed the contract as part of “Board Member Reports/Discussion Points,” but it wasn’t originally described as an action item
The board held a lengthy discussion about contract requests made by Schiller in February, a copy of which was obtained by Spectrum News 13.
During Tuesday’s meeting, Schiller said there were issues “from Day 1,” describing a “lack of communication or a lack of full disclosure regarding the contract” as part of the strain of the past few months of his tenure.
He began as the interim superintendent of Brevard Public Schools at the start of 2023. Schiller said he didn’t receive a copy of the contract to evaluate before the board published it as an agenda item for consideration.
“My goodness! I mean, it’s been wrong from Day 1, but I persevered for this. I don’t walk away,” Schiller said. “I’ll lose battles, but I’m going to win a war. I’ve been pushed to the point where what else do I have to do in order to get some information?”
Schiller noted that he and the board previously talked about having “no surprises” when walking into board meetings and said having his Feb. 24 contract comments to Board Chair Matt Susin and Board Attorney Paul Gibbs published as part of the agenda was not disclosed to him ahead of time.
“We should have walked away from each other that weekend after I got the phone call on Dec. 17 or so,” Schiller said. “But now, stupid me, I gave up other opportunities I was committed to because I thought I could help here, a district that was in a situation that it was in.”
Board member Katye Campbell said during the meeting that she asked that the document be removed from the public-facing agenda because she “didn’t think they were appropriate to be out on a public agenda.”
Susin then said that, “The reason staff thought it was appropriate to put it on there was because it was your last response during the conversation of all of these items.”
Gibbs clarified that there were meetings and phone conversations after that point, to which Schiller asked why the board didn’t include the additional updates in February and March in the agenda record.
Susin followed up by saying that they also received some accusations regarding Schiller that he said they need to assess and wanted to put Schiller on administrative leave. Susin made the motion to put Schiller on leave, and Board member Megan Wright seconded the motion.
The board then appointed Sue Hann, the assistant superintendent for facilities, to be the acting superintendent, effective immediately.
In a statement to the press, the district stated that, “The School Board is in the process of recruiting for a new permanent superintendent and that process will continue.”
