The UNCG Scholastic Esports Alliance, or UNCG SEA, will combine competitive gaming with STEM and other curriculum-focused classes to encourage students to learn more about those careers.

All North Carolina public high schools are eligible to participate at no fee in exchange for creating an esports program and working with UNCG SEA to complete a Curriculum Discovery Process and an Esports Technology Review.

It is the first education-based statewide league run by a university in the nation.

UNCG Professor of Public Health David Wyrick serves as the interim director of Launch UNCG, the office that oversees many of the esport activities.

He says the competitions will start at the end of February, and the STEM classes will roll out next.

“We will do some technology assessments to see what the needs of the schools are, and see what role we can play in helping meet those needs and then roll out the league again next fall with a full curriculum ready to go," Wyrick said.

The pilot program will include a seven-week season of competitions in Rocket League and Fortnite.

UNCG will host the state championships at its esports arena and learning lab in May.
