SAN ANTONIO — Teachers and coaches describe December’s Scholar Athlete, Avery Green, as a smart, hard-working student who leads by example.
Green is a senior at Harlondale High School and gives it her all when it comes to sports.
“I’m always determined to be one of the best players on the court,” she said.
Coach Anna Castro explains how Avery’s personality shines through.
“It takes a special group of girls, and she’s one of the leaders in that special group,” Castro said.
Avery’s skills extend beyond the court. She’s at the top of her class and knows how to find the balance of schoolwork and sports.
“I know it’s probably a cliché answer, but it’s time management,” she said. “You have to make sure your priorities are right. It’s like choosing to go out or stay home and practice—you have to stay home, practice, study and make sure you look at the end goal.”
When asked about what she loves the most about volleyball, Avery explains that it’s “the competitiveness. You never know who’s on the other side of the court.”
Looking ahead, Avery already knows what she’s planning to study after high school. She said that she’s majoring in health science studies to become a dermatologist.
