  • It resulted in the SUV crashing into Phantom Fireworks, starting the fire

  • The driver of the pickup truck is OK, but the SUV driver was killed, stated authorities

The Phantom Fireworks store was near the intersection of U.S. 192 and South John Rodes Boulevard.

Florida state troopers said that a pickup truck and an SUV were heading south on South John Rodes Boulevard as they approached the intersection of U.S. 192.

For some reason, the driver of the SUV hit the back of the truck and pushed them both into the parking lot of the Phantom Fireworks.

The truck was able to turn left out of the way, but the SUV slammed into the store, setting off the fire.

Flames and fireworks shot out of the roof of Phantom Fireworks for about an hour or so starting around 4:15 p.m.

Firefighters were able to knock down the fire within an hour of it igniting.

“When officers arrived, you could hear the fireworks going off," said Lt. Graig Erenstoft of the West Melbourne Police Department. "The building was fully engulfed, and you could see the vehicle in there but it was too much to go inside and check.”

Two employees were about to make it out before the fire got going, but the driver of the SUV was engulfed in flames and died.

Shajayla Whitaker captured images from her phone after hearing explosions while at a nearby gas station.

“The fireworks were actually shooting off in our direction, and the fireworks were hitting the road, the firetrucks, the police officers,” Whitaker said.

Firefighters were kept at the site overnight to monitor any potential hotspots.

The state fire marshal is now in charge of investigating the fire inside the building.

As for the two drivers involved, the driver in the pickup truck was a 39-year-old woman who was not injured.

The driver in the SUV who died was described by troopers as a 53-year-old man from West Melbourne.

His family has been notified, but officials have not released his name.
