Last year, law enforcement was able to collect over 700,000 pounds of prescription drugs.

On National Drug Take Back Day, people are able to stop by one of many different locations across Central Florida to drop off prescriptions drugs that they no longer need.

This provides a better opportunity for people to get rid of medicine safely, rather than holding onto it or flushing anything down the toilet.

It also prevents drugs from falling into the wrong hands by sitting in a medicine cabinet.

“This is a venue where we can accomplish a couple of things,” said HCA Florida Healthcare Primary Care Physician Dr. Duron Lee. “Number one, we can educate the public on opiate misuse. Number two, provide a safe, anonymous, and appropriate way of getting rid of any unused, expired, or unwanted medications.”

Last year, HCA Healthcare facilities alone collected over 15,000 pounds of unwanted drugs.

Several local law enforcement agencies and organizations are holding drug take back events on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
