ORLANDO, Fla. — Changes made during I-4 Ultimate have made it challenging to drive at Kaley Street and I-4, according to an Orlando man.

Jerry Cannon said it can be difficult to get on the new I-4 West ramp when driving westbound on Kaley Street because of merging traffic.

What You Need To Know

  • Aggressive drivers make it difficult to merge on to I-4 West from Kaley Street

  • During I-4 Ultimate, FDOT reconfigured the I-4 interchanges with Kaley and Michigan streets

  • An FDOT team monitored the new interchange but didn’t find any issues

“If the person that wants to actually get on I-4 wants to rush, they’ll use the outside lane, swing around and cut across,” Cannon said.

Drivers have to merge from both eastbound and westbound Kaley Street, along with traffic coming from a U-turn underneath the interstate to get to both I-4 West and East.

What’s unique about this interchange is that it has something called a Texas U-turn, where you can actually make a U-turn from I-4 East to get onto I-4 West, without waiting at a light.

But that U-turn lane also merges with other drivers from Kaley that are trying to get on to westbound I-4.

“I’ve had several close calls,” Cannon said. “I just had one, the guy behind me is pushing me to go faster.”

Due to their proximity, the Florida Department of Transportation combined the Kaley and Michigan Street interchanges as a part of I-4 Ultimate work with braided ramps, frontage roads and U-turns to reduce traffic weaving on I-4.

The U-turn at Kaley allows drivers on Michigan Street to turn under the interstate near Kaley and enter I-4 West.

“They should cut that return, U-turn. Just get rid of that,” Cannon said. “That’s worthless.”

FDOT sent its traffic operations team to see if any traffic control devices, signs or pavement markings need to be adjusted. After monitoring how drivers navigated the area, FDOT didn’t find any issues, a spokesperson said.
