ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Walking away from the bright lights of FBC Mortgage Stadium, visibility dims as residents take the trek home after an evening football game.

Jenn Smykay, a fan of the UCF Knights, is raising concerns about routes that feel dangerous and dark, mainly McCullough Road.

“My husband and I like to go to the football games,” she said. “We like to go to the tailgate parties, but when we come back, this stretch is very dark.”

What You Need To Know

  • There’s no street lighting on McCulloch Road from Orion Boulevard to Worcester Drive

  • Jenn Smykay says it’s dark for those walking home from UCF

  • Orange County has long-term plans to widen McCulloch Road and install street lights

There is no street lighting along McCulloch Road from Orion Boulevard to Worcester Drive.

“My concern is that something bad could really happen,” Smykay said.

The issue is this stretch of McCulloch Road is split between Orange and Seminole counties.

“Are there any plans?” she asked. “Does Seminole County, Orange County have any plans to fix and make it safer?”

The answer is no — and yes.

There are no short-term plans.

But Orange County’s traffic engineering division has plans to widen McCulloch Road in the area to four lanes. The project would also install street lighting.

That’s going to take time however, at least 6 years — and maybe even longer, depending on funding.

“Can’t be too safe in these days,” she said.
