The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County hosted The Hispanic League’s 30th-anniversary exhibition, "Celebrating our legacy, igniting our future." The exhibition was on view at Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts in Winston-Salem.
One artist featured in the exhibit was 21-year-old Yosimar Alvarez Gutierrez, who is a self-taught artist.
“I was always drawing," Gutierrez said. "And I didn't decide to take myself seriously at least until high school."
He said it's important to have his diverse culture represented especially during National Hispanic Heritage Month.
"I always try to put, whether it's a piece of my culture and where I come from," Gutierrez said. "Just making that apparent or making up a thing of that piece. Or just even my queer identity. I always try to push for as much representation as I can.”
National Hispanic Heritage Month is annually celebrated from September 15 to October 15.
