MELBOURNE, Fla. — A relatively new road project in Melbourne has drivers frustrated that it hasn’t relieved backups as intended.

Mark Cannon said the road project failed to relieve backups at U.S. 192 and U.S. 1.

“There are plenty of options to turn right, but only one option to go straight. So that’s the issue that creates traffic backups,” he said.

Westbound U.S. 192 at U.S. 1 only has one straight lane to go through the intersection, Cannon said.

“If they just had a straight arrow instead of these right-turn-only arrows, then you could go straight through,” he said.

While there are two right-turn-only lanes to get on to U.S. 1 North, there’s just a single through lane for westbound drivers who want to travel straight on 192.

The single through lane means some will use one of the right turn lanes to cut through in the intersection to go straight.

Our Traffic Expert Jerry Hume has reached out to the Florida Department of Transportation about this problem once before.

A spokesperson with FDOT said the agency is working to advance a project that would provide two westbound U.S. 192 through lanes. However, they don’t have a timeline of when they’ll make those changes.

Cannon said he feels it shouldn’t take long to fix the problem.

“It’s insane, and I don’t understand why a bucket of paint can’t fix this whole problem,” he said.
