ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — A fast-growing spot in Volusia County that already has substandard infrastructure may get a facelift.
Crashes and congestion plague US-1 at I-95 in the Destination Daytona area of Ormond Beach.
What You Need To Know
- US-1 at I-95 in the Destination Daytona area of Ormond Beach could face changes
- Crashes and congestion are common in that area, and more traffic is forecast
- FDOT is considering building a Diverging Diamond or an Offset interchange
- A public hearing will be held in Spring 2023
“This place has a lot of potential," said Sue Sookdeo, who opened the Honey Bee Café off US-1 back in April. "I like it because there’s a big community here that don’t have many places to go past the bridge.”
A Florida Department of Transportation analysis says growing communities like Ormond Crossings and Plantation Oaks will mean traffic on US-1 will more than double by 2050. Traffic on nearby I-95 will increase by more than 40%.
“It’s going to grow very good,” Sookdeo said.
But with all that traffic comes crashes.
On top of that, the I-95 US-1 tight loop ramps and the vertical clearance of the I-95 bridges don’t meet current FDOT standards.
So the state wants to reconfigure the interchange and build either a Diverging Diamond Interchange, or an Offset Interchange.
Also, FDOT wants to turn US-1 from four lanes into six lanes, with sidewalks.
Because a lot of the crashes happen at intersections, median openings and driveways, the plan would limit the openings and driveways.
“For a small business that just opened, are we going to lose business or gain business? We don’t know how that’s going to work, so that’s nerve-wracking,” said Sue’s daughter Sophie Sookdeo, who also works at the café.
FDOT is still studying the area to determine which interchange configuration would work the best.
A public hearing is set for the spring next year.
