WINTER PARK, Fla. — A 15-year-old student at the Winter Park 9th Grade Center was arrested on charges of bringing a firearm on school property, Winter Park police said Wednesday.

Officers received a tip Wednesday morning through the Fortify Florida app that a student had a gun in his backpack and was on campus at Winter Park High School, 2100 Summerfield Road, police said. The school was placed on lockdown at the time, police said.

Winter Park police assisted school resources officers, located the student and searched his backpack. They found a handgun and a magazine that contained three bullets in the student’s backpack, police said.

All staff members and students are safe, and the lockdown has been lifted, police said.

The student was taken into custody on charges of possession of a firearm on school property, which is a third-degree felony, and disruption of a school function, which is a second-degree misdemeanor.
