The Friday night lights are flipped on, with players returning to the field for the start of the high school football season across central Florida. Of course, no trip to the bleachers is complete without a stop at the concession stand.

What You Need To Know

  •  Band parents at Dr. Phillips High School have been preparing all week to run concessions at the first football game of the season

  •  They said while the team was on the field practicing, they were practicing their burger-flipping technique

  • Even while dealing with inclement weather, the food workers expected to see long lines

Parents at Dr. Phillips High School arrived hours before the start of the season's first game to get the food and drinks ready. While the team has been practicing all week for the big game on the field — the parents working the concession stand say they got their practice last week — and on Friday night, it was time to showcase their talent.

From flipping the burgers under the bleachers to preparing the candy inside the concession stand, the high school band parents said they were ready for the first night of Friday night lights.

"Yeah, these are done," said Marek Bullion, a Dr. Phillips High School graduate and parent of an 11th-grade band member.

Some of the veterans on the concessions team said they were ready for the season to start.

"It is quite a long night when we have a rain delay," said Sue Fischer, concessions manager and parent of a 12th-grade band member.

They said that even with the inclement weather, they were ready for the crowds to start packing the stadium.

"We will have lines all the way out past those tables," said Fischer.

Bullion said feeding the fans is hard work, but it's also fun to do.

"It is nice to be out here again," he said. "Definitely have fun serving our community, everyone gets around football — it's defiantly a fun time. I think everybody looks forward to a good night of football — try to get up some good food for everybody, feed them, take care of them."

He said the energy from the crowd is electric.

"Once those gates open down there, you definitely feel the energy coming in, all of the fans coming i," said Bullion. "Once you hear the marching band, the drum line going, it definitely brings a boost of energy."

This team certainly has their game plan ready to go because they know their crowds and what they buy.

"It's funny cause the lines will always be there, but who comes to the concession stand really varies depending on who we are playing," Fischer said.

Having gotten to know their teammates, the band parents said they are prepared week after week.

"We get here at the same time, we know what's gotta get done, and we get it done," said Bullion.

Even though things do get busy, the band parents working the concessions said they don't forget to call a timeout and take a break to cheer on their children, who are making the music that pumps up the Friday night crowd.
